Cane Maintenance |
|
All Natural Cane and Wicker furniture that has spent many summers on an open front verandah were never intended to withstand the elements. Sun bakes the fibres leaving them dry and brittle, moisture can loosen joints and warp frames. In other words, natural wicker furniture was made for indoor use.
Natural Wicker Furniture is easy to clean. The best method being to dust regularly with a soft cloth, a soft brush, or vacuuming the piece with the brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner. A soft bristled tooth brush is ideal for those hard to get places. Periodically wipe it down with a soft damp cloth followed by a light application of a good furniture polish for sheen and protection. If your wicker has become badly soiled, use water and a mild soap solution, rinse and let dry followed by a coat of natural lacquer. Your natural wicker furniture will look new again.
When left outside, and if the furniture becomes wet, leave to dry and the furniture will not be affected.
Over an extended period of time outside, where possible, natural rattan furniture should be stored in dry
conditions as it is organic material. Prolonged dampness can lead to mould.
All Weather Wicker is easy to clean. Use only a mild soap and water solution and rinse thoroughly. Do not store furniture upside down as water may accumulate. To extend the life of your furniture, store indoors during months of non use.
Rattan (Cane) Webbing has to be wet when fitting. It will dry tight. Humidity and rain may cause the rattan to go loose and bulge slightly.
It will eventually dry tight. Should the rattan webbing stay loose and look stretched, then apply water and then allow to dry naturally.
And yes, it will dry tight yet again.
If not....then you may have to replace the rattan webbing.
Use a damp cloth to clean, and you can apply a little Linseed Oil which will nourish the rattan.
Best to leave rattan webbing in it's natural state, although a thin application of paint (lacquer based) or polyurethane would be ok, but only on the facing/top side (shiny side).
This will allow the rattan webbing to breathe and give maximum longevity.
Paint may flake off over time if the rattan webbing is subject to temperature variation with humidity.
