Chair Caning Instructions |
|
There are two methods of caning a chair seat, so make sure that you are aware of the two types of seats for re caning.
A chair seat with holes around the frame indicate that the seat has been hand woven. A groove around the seat frame indicates that pre woven rattan webbing has been used as the webbing is held in with a cane spline that sits in the groove.
A hand woven seat in most cases can have pre woven rattan webbing fitted provided that the timber seat frame is thick and strong enough to have a groove routered where the holes are in the seat.
Here's simple and easy to follow step by step instructions on how to re cane your chair seat.

How To Re cane a seat with
Pre Woven Rattan Webbing and Cane Spline. What You Need: Water, clean damp cloth, utility knife, hammer or mallet, chisel, pva wood glue, sandpaper. DIY kit, includes rattan webbing and spline, wooden tool and instruction sheet. Useful Tips: Remove seat from chair ( if possible) place on work bench with an old towel underneath. Removing the old spline can be challenging. If you are confident, use a router, or drill several holes as close as possible into the spline, then use a small screw driver to chisel out the old spline. For stubborn spline removal, use a solution of white vinegar which can be injected into the holes that will soften the spline after about 15-20 mins. Always sand the inside edge of the groove a little before fitting the rattan webbing. Allow the rattan webbing to dry slow and naturally, not near any heat or sun.

How To Re cane a seat the Hand Woven method.
What You Need: Water ( Spray Bottle), hammer for tapping in any plugs, a large nail to assist in cleaning out holes. Small pinchers. DIY Kit, includes chair cane, reed plugs, tapered tees and instruction sheet. Useful Tips: Make sure all of the holes are clean, check each cane to ensure that it is not too dry and brittle, bending at 90 degrees without breaking is good. Dampen cane with water before weaving. Save waste, use up all shorter ends for diagonals. Run the cane through your nails to see what direction to weave in. It should be the smooth, not hitting any cane nodes. After step 4, use the pinchers to make the square hole as small as possible and straighten the lines. There's only ONE WAY the diagonals are woven. It's correct when the diagonals run smooth and straight, not zig zagging. And finally, for non round seats/backs, always start weaving the diagonals from the corners.
