Pre Woven DIY Kits

Pre Woven 1/2" Open Weave Rattan Webbing.
Available in 450 mm and 610 mm wide.

Open Weave Rattan Webbing: Is the most common and easiest to fit. You can stain and paint only over the top surface so as to allow the webbing to breathe.
Best to leave natural or apply shellac or oil. It will darken with age.

Webbing Ordering: Allow at least 25 mm overhang all around.

Spline Ordering:  Order spline ( Round Core/Reed) that's 1 mm smaller than the width of the groove.
Example: Groove width is 5 mm, then use 4 mm spline.

Tools for the job: Warm water, Damp Cloth, Hammer, Utility Knife, Scissors, Wooden Wedge, or Metal Tool. There's no 'Off The Shelf' Tool available. So you'll have to improvise.
A wooden stick or metal wedge, old chisel, large coin, handle end of cutlery, etc, all with a smooth round edge that will fit into a channel approx 6 mm wide will suffice.

Tips: The rattan webbing has to be wet when fitting. It will dry tight.
However the fit the spline dry or very slightly damp.

When To Re Cane: Best on a cool day and in a cool environment.
Do not carry out this work in warm weather as the webbing will dry out too fast. Not good.

Longevity: In my experience of more than 30 years of re caning, If you look after the webbing by occasionally wiping over with a damp cloth, and apply Orange Oil to help nourish the cane, then you should get at least 7-10 years with everyday wear and tear.

NOTE: Humidity and rain may cause the rattan to go loose and buckle slightly. It will eventually dry tight. Should the rattan webbing stay loose and look stretched, then apply water over the webbing and then allow to dry slow and naturally. And yes, it will dry tight again. If not....then you may have to re cane the seat.
