Wicker Pilot seats For: Sopwith Dolphin/Snipe/Camel
Of all the things that I have made over the years, making a replica wicker pilot seat for a WW1 Sopwith Snipe has been one of my most challenging and rewarding of projects. This all came about from a client living in Mt Eliza, Victoria. who was building his very own replica Sopwith from his home. The man of many skills and know-how I'm sure, you would need to, to take on such an engineering project. However the wicker seat was not something he was prepared to attempt. Thought he would leave that up to the Wicker Guru. So the first wicker pilot seat was made late May 2006. Created from a few rattan poles and a bundle of reed, this unique seat was handcrafted, copied from the plans of a secret and confidential document, dated 5/3/1925. You can see just how it all came together in the gallery below. Orders for Wicker Pilot Seats now come not only from Australia but from across the world, including USA, England and New Zealand. The Vintage Aviator, Wellington, New Zealand. http://thevintageaviator.co.nz/node RAF Museum in Cosford, England. http://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/cosford/ who ordered a Wicker Pilot Seat made for a Sopwith Dolphin which was being restored and was due for exhibition early January 2012. |
